Frequently Asked Questions About Getting Your Boat or PWC Licence in Brisbane

At iLicence Brisbane, we make getting your boat licence or jetski licence simple, practical, and stress-free. Our accredited training courses combine both theory and hands-on experience to ensure you gain the confidence and skills needed to stay safe on the water. Whether you’re a complete beginner or upgrading to a PWC licence, our friendly instructors will guide you through the entire process so you’re fully prepared for your marine adventure.

Do I need a licence to drive a boat or PWC (personal watercraft)?

Yes. In Queensland, you need a Recreational Marine Driver Licence (RMDL) if your boat has an engine power greater than 4.5 kW. For jet skis and PWCs, you must hold a Personal Watercraft (PWC) Licence.

At iLicence Brisbane, we offer tailored courses for both, so whether you’re planning to take out a tinny, cruiser, or jet ski, we’ll make sure you have the right licence to get on the water legally and safely.

How old do I need to be?

You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a Queensland marine licence. Younger boating enthusiasts can start learning and preparing with guidance, but the official licence is only issued once you turn 16.

At iLicence, we regularly train both younger students eager to get started as soon as they’re eligible and adults of all ages looking to enjoy more freedom on the water.

Do I need to renew the licence?

No. Once issued, the Queensland recreational marine licence is valid for life, with no renewal required. That means after training and assessment with iLicence, you can enjoy boating or jet skiing for years to come without ongoing paperwork or costs.

If I already have a licence from another state, can I use it in Queensland? Or transfer it?

Yes. Interstate marine licences are generally recognised in Queensland if they’re current and meet local requirements. If you’re planning to stay in Queensland long-term, you may also convert your interstate licence into a Queensland licence.

At iLicence Brisbane, we can help explain the process and ensure you know exactly what’s needed to get on the water without delay.

Is prior boating experience required?

No. You don’t need prior boating or jet ski experience to complete your marine licence training. At iLicence, our courses are designed for complete beginners as well as those with some time on the water.

Our trainers take you step by step through everything — from understanding the rules of the water to practical manoeuvres — so you finish the course confident and prepared.

What types of licences are there?

There are two main types of recreational marine licences in Queensland:

  • Recreational Marine Driver Licence (RMDL): For operating powered recreational vessels with an engine power greater than 4.5 kW.

  • Personal Watercraft Licence (PWC licence): Specifically for operating jet skis and other personal watercraft.

With iLicence Brisbane, you can complete training and assessments for both licences. Many students choose to do them together for convenience, so they’re licensed for any recreational vessel they might want to operate.
