First Aid Training Saves Cyclist in Brisbane
During a community cycling event in Brisbane in 2019, a participant collapsed due to a severe allergic reaction after being stung by a bee. A fellow cyclist who had first aid currency quickly recognized the signs of anaphylaxis and administered an EpiPen that the participant was carrying. The trained cyclist then called emergency services and monitored the participant until they arrived. The quick and informed actions ensured the participant received the necessary care in time, potentially preventing a life-threatening situation.
Young Boy Saved from Choking in Perth
In 2021, a six-year-old boy began choking on a piece of candy during a family gathering in Perth. His mother, who had completed a first aid course as part of her role as a teacher, quickly recognized the signs of choking. She immediately performed the Heimlich manoeuvre (abdominal thrusts) on her son. After a few attempts, the piece of candy was dislodged, and the boy was able to breathe again. Paramedics later arrived and confirmed that the mother's quick and knowledgeable response had prevented a potentially fatal outcome.
